<p><strong>The IT industry finds itself grappling with a pressing skills shortage. The demand for proficient IT personnel outpaces the available supply. A potential remedy to this issue lies in vocational colleges, according to Thomas Persson, Director-General at the Swedish Agency for Higher Vocational Education (MYH).</strong></p>
<p>– What sets vocational colleges apart from other educational systems in Sweden and around the world is that it&#8217;s not the authority that dictates the content of curriculum and study plans; rather, it&#8217;s a collaborative effort between local and regional businesses with skill requirements and the education providers, explains Thomas Persson.</p>
<p>The concept of vocational education, akin to the construction industry&#8217;s model, could be the solution to numerous challenges faced by the IT sector. The root causes of the skills gap in the IT market have rational explanations, as detailed by Thomas Persson. MYH&#8217;s analysis points to the paradigm shift underway.</p>
<p>– Significant deficits exist in general, linked to the profound societal changes transpiring, where existing or new professional roles evolve – propelled by digitalization, automation, and the green transition. This results in a distinct competency demand unlike anything we&#8217;ve seen before, Thomas Persson states in the <a href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/2c01vOEZ7RGY3TjaRtaJeQ?si=5MxKdYwGQkqI9zHvLEO76w">Digital Influencer Podcast</a>.</p>
<p>For a long time, pursuing vocational education has been viewed as a straightforward path to employment. This approach offers a viable solution to the IT industry&#8217;s personnel challenges in both the short and long term.</p>
<p>– Of those who graduate from vocational colleges, over ninety percent secure employment within a year. And of these, roughly ninety percent have a job that fully, largely, or partially corresponds to the education they completed, explains Thomas Persson.</p>

<p>Another challenge facing the industry is gender equality. Currently, approximately 30 percent of the sector comprises women. Concurrently, many surveys indicate that women drawn to the field tend to veer away due to its perceived masculine nature. In an effort to reverse this trend, Consid launched the Q by Consid platform, which in turn initiates projects aimed at attracting more women to IT and tech.</p>
<p>However, achieving a gender-balanced industry extends beyond individual companies. It requires alignment in both policies and education. Under Thomas Persson&#8217;s leadership, the Swedish Agency for Higher Vocational Education has significantly expanded the number of programs and enrolled students. For one of the industries, this expansion has contributed to reducing the gender gap, as the Director-General elucidates:</p>
<p>– I often use the construction industry as a prime example – they&#8217;ve transitioned from a fairly low female representation to now reaching 30–40 percent women. This has primarily centered around focusing not just on education but on professional activity post-education, Thomas Persson affirms.</p>
