3 considerations for KeyShot Dock-PIM integration

Connecting your KeyShot DAM system with your PIM is essential to achieve effective workflows and follow good data governance practices. Through years of expertise, we can highlight 3 key considerations for successful integration.

1. Data governance and processes

Everything starts with the data and answering questions like: What data and formats are there? Where is the source? Who is responsible for onboarding and maintaining the data? When is it onboarded? This will guide in the governance processes to determine how the data optimally should flow and when.

What asset related data will be owned and managed in KeyShot Dock and the PIM respectively, having clear data ownership and role responsibilities is crucial to fully leverage the strengths of each system. That said both KeyShot and most PIM systems have the flexibility to bend the best-practices a little for where data is owned, if one system or the other would suite your organisation and processes better.

2. One-way or two-way integration

Once you know which data, roles and overall process flows you are working with, you can consider how to create the optimal workflows for your users. The primary need is of course an integration of assets from KeyShot Dock to your PIM, but being a leading DAM vendor KeyShot can also integrate with your PIM to fetch relevant category or assortment data for the assets, lowering the manual efforts to enrich the assets and often getting more data ‘for free’.

Taking this a step further and something that can be a game changer for effectiveness is to automatically replicate an assortment structure as folders in KeyShot Dock. This is huge as you will have a clearly defined, logical and always up-to-date folder structure to place your product related assets in, it also can help you tackle the next topic.

3. Asset and assortment linking

Where and how to manage the connection between the assets and your PIM assortment is a big decision, by know you may already have a preference that suits you and there is no right or wrong way, only possibilities. If you are using the described method where a PIM assortment structure is replicated as folders, you already have the needed metadata (KeyShot folder = PIM object) and in the integration can automate the linking of your assets to your related assortment in the PIM.

Other common options are to enter a reference id on your assets in KeyShot Dock that can be used to automate the linking in the integration, or to add the assets unlinked in the PIM and manually connect them to the right places in the assortment. Don’t forget to talk about how to sort the assets if multiple is connected to for example the same product, should this be a manual action by the user and how are the notified that a new image is added to the product, or can this be automated based on asset metadata for example the asset type.
